Damage Protection

Hire with confidence

Accidents happen. That's why Damage Protection is included with every qualifying Captis hire.

You don't need to arrange separate hired-in equipment insurance, and we don't normally require a large security deposit.

For qualifying accidental damage during normal use, your liability is limited to a maximum £350 excess.

How it works

If you accidentally damage equipment while using it normally and you've taken reasonable care of it, our Damage Protection limits what you'll need to pay.

Damage costs £150 to repair?
You pay £150.

Damage costs £800 to repair?
You pay a maximum of £350.

The equipment is accidentally damaged beyond economic repair?
Provided the damage qualifies for Damage Protection and you've complied with the Rental Terms, your liability is normally limited to £350.

There are no forms to arrange separate equipment insurance before your hire.

Optional Damage Waiver

For even greater peace of mind, you may be able to add our optional Damage Waiver when booking.

The Damage Waiver costs 10% of your equipment hire charge and reduces your £350 accidental-damage excess to:

£0

So if qualifying accidental damage happens during your hire, there is no accidental-damage excess to pay.

The price of the Damage Waiver is shown clearly before checkout.

Example

Equipment hire: £80
Damage Waiver: £8
Accidental-damage excess: £0

The Damage Waiver is optional. Our standard Damage Protection is included whether you purchase it or not.

What does Damage Protection cover?

Damage Protection is intended for genuine accidents during normal, permitted use of our equipment.

Examples could include accidentally dropping a lens, knocking equipment against something while shooting, or another unexpected accident despite taking reasonable care.

Damage Protection does not mean you can take unreasonable risks with the equipment.

We simply ask that you look after it as you would your own valuable camera equipment.

What isn't covered?

Damage Protection and the optional Damage Waiver don't automatically limit your liability for circumstances such as:

  • deliberate or reckless damage;
  • gross negligence or a serious failure to take reasonable care;
  • loss or non-return of equipment;
  • fraud or deliberate misrepresentation;
  • lending or sub-hiring equipment without our permission;
  • unauthorised dismantling, modification or repair;
  • prohibited or unlawful use; or
  • continuing to use damaged equipment where doing so causes further damage.

The full details are set out in our Rental Terms & Conditions.

What about theft?

If Captis equipment is stolen, contact us as soon as possible.

You should also report the theft promptly to the police and obtain a crime reference number.

The £350 accidental-damage excess and optional Damage Waiver do not automatically apply to theft.

How liability is dealt with will depend upon the circumstances, including whether reasonable precautions were taken to keep the equipment secure.

Full details are contained in our Rental Terms & Conditions.

What if something is damaged in transit?

That's different.

When Captis sends equipment to you, we arrange the delivery.

When it's time to return it, we'll also provide the approved return method and instructions.

Provided you:

  1. pack everything properly using the protective packaging supplied;
  2. follow our return instructions;
  3. hand the parcel to our nominated carrier or approved return location by the required time; and
  4. keep your proof of return,

you won't normally be responsible simply because the courier subsequently loses or damages the parcel.

We arrange the delivery. We arrange the return. We take the transit risk.

If your own actions or packaging cause or materially contribute to damage, different provisions may apply.

What counts as normal wear and tear?

We don't expect equipment to come back looking untouched forever.

Minor cosmetic wear resulting from careful, normal use isn't something we'll charge you for.

Damage affecting the operation, value or future hireability of the equipment is different.

For example, significant impact damage, damaged optical glass or liquid ingress wouldn't normally be considered fair wear and tear.

Something happened. What should I do?

Don't panic and don't attempt a repair yourself.

Stop using the equipment if continuing could make the damage worse and contact Captis as soon as reasonably possible.

Tell us what happened and, where useful, send us photographs.

We'll explain what happens next.

We don't want customers hiding genuine accidents because they're frightened of an unknown bill. That's exactly why our Damage Protection has a clear maximum excess.
